Weiss, Emilio (Naval Medical Research Institute, Bethesda, Md.) and Harry R. Dressler. Properties of quinoxaline oxide-resistant Rickettsia typhi. J. Bacteriol. 83:415-417. 1962.-An effort was made to apply to the Wilmington strain of Rickettsia typhi the observation that in certain strains of rickettsiae and viruses of the psittacosis group quinoxaline oxide resistance is easily obtained and is often accompanied by other changes. Resistance to quinoxaline oxide was obtained in R. typhi after 14 serial egg passages by a procedure somewhat more elaborate than the one used previously for R. prowazekii. Three limit-dilution isolates manifested an appreciable level of drug resistance (were unaffected by 0.5 mg/egg), but changes for unselected characteristics, such as "toxicity" for the mouse or growth or virulence for the chick embryo, were small and different in each case, and did not clearly resemble those obtained with the other microorganisms.

Detection of point mutations in rpoB gene of rifampin-resistant Rickettsia typhi.
The rpoB gene of rifampin-resistant Rickettsia typhi (Rif mutant) and wild-type R. typhi were sequenced and compared. The Rif mutant rpoB had three nucleotide substitutions, which resulted in amino acid changes at residues 151, 201, and 271 and may be the basis for the rifampin resistance.
متن کاملQuinoxaline 1,4-di-N-oxide and the potential for treating tuberculosis.
New drugs active against drug-resistant tuberculosis are urgently needed to extend the range of TB treatment options to cover drug resistant infections. Quinoxaline derivatives show very interesting biological properties (antibacterial, antiviral, anticancer, antifungal, antihelmintic, insecticidal) and evaluation of their medicinal chemistry is still in progress. In this review we report the p...
متن کاملComparative sequence analysis of a genus-common rickettsial antigen gene.
The genes encoding the 17-kilodalton genus-common antigen have been cloned and sequenced from Rickettsia conorii, Rickettsia prowazekii, and Rickettsia typhi. Compared with the R. rickettsii sequence, this sequence had a high degree of homology within the coding and control regions (R. conorii, 99.8%; R. prowazekii, 88.1%; R. typhi, 88.7%). The 5' flanking regions, including the promoter and th...
متن کاملRickettsia typhi and R. felis in Rat Fleas (Xenopsylla cheopis), Oahu, Hawaii
Rickettsia typhi (prevalence 1.9%) and R. felis (prevalence 24.8%) DNA were detected in rat fleas (Xenopsylla cheopis) collected from mice on Oahu Island, Hawaii. The low prevalence of R. typhi on Oahu suggests that R. felis may be a more common cause of rickettsiosis than R. typhi in Hawaii.
متن کاملRickettsia typhi IN RODENTS AND R. felis IN FLEAS IN YUCATÁN AS A POSSIBLE CAUSAL AGENT OF UNDEFINED FEBRILE CASES
Rickettsia typhi is the causal agent of murine typhus; a worldwide zoonotic and vector-borne infectious disease, commonly associated with the presence of domestic and wild rodents. Human cases of murine typhus in the state of Yucatán are frequent. However, there is no evidence of the presence of Rickettsia typhi in mammals or vectors in Yucatán. The presence of Rickettsia in rodents and their e...
